Does your SEC team have more bowl wins or NCAA Tournament wins this decade?

We know the answer in Lexington.

And given that it’s possible to win multiple NCAA Tournament games every season, it seems like basketball has a heavy advantage just about everywhere except Tuscaloosa.

But does it?

Let’s take a look and find out whether your favorite SEC team has won more football bowl games or NCAA Tournament basketball games in the past 10 seasons.

Alabama

Football (2008-2017 seasons): 9 wins

Basketball (2007-08 to 2016-17 seasons): 0 wins

Skinny: Was there any doubt? Alabama has only made it to the NCAA Tournament once in the past 10 seasons, and it lost its opening game in 2012. Its last NCAA Tournament victory came in 2006, before Nick Saban won his first of five football championships with the Tide.

Arkansas

Football (2008-2017): 4 wins

Basketball (2007-08 to 2016-17): 3 wins

Skinny: Arkansas won a national championship in 1994, but that was a long, long time ago. They haven’t been back to the Sweet 16 since 1996. Bret Bielema led the Hogs to two of their four bowl wins in the past 10 seasons.

Auburn

Football (2008-2017): 4 wins

Basketball (2007-08 to 2016-17): 0 wins

Skinny: Auburn’s basketball program is back in the top 10 for the first time since 2000. They’ll make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003. The Tigers’ biggest bowl win this decade is rather obvious: the 2010 BCS Championship Game over Oregon.

Florida

Football (2008-2017): 6 wins

Basketball (2007-08 to 2016-17): 16 wins

Skinny: Unfortunately, both of Billy Donovan’s two consecutive NCAA championships occurred just before this 10-year span started, but the Gators made it back to the Elite 8 five times. Urban Meyer’s 2008 national championship does count in this exercise and is obviously the biggest of the 6 wins.

Georgia

Football (2008-2017): 7 wins

Basketball (2007-08 to 2016-17): 0 wins

Skinny: The Dawgs have gone to the NCAA Tournament three times, but their last victory was in the opening round in 2002. Kirby Smart’s Rose Bowl victory that sent the Dawgs to the National Championship Game is the biggest bowl win.

Kentucky

Football (2008-2017): 1 win

Basketball (2007-08 to 2016-17): 26 wins

Skinny: Even if Benny Snell weren’t ejected and had led Kentucky to a Music City comeback, basketball is still king. John Calipari’s crowning moment came with the 2012 national championship.

LSU

Football (2008-2017): 5 wins

Basketball (2007-08 to 2016-17): 1 win

Skinny: The 2007 national championship always counts — but not here. The best bowl win in this span was pounding Heisman winner Lamar Jackson in the January 2017 Citrus Bowl.

Mississippi State

Football (2008-2017): 6 wins

Basketball (2007-08 to 2016-17): 1 win

Skinny: The Bulldogs haven’t been to the NCAA Tournament since losing their opening game to Washington in 2008. Dan Mullen made bowl games part of the holiday season, leading Hail State to the postseason each of his final eight seasons.

Missouri

Football (2008-2017): 4 wins

Basketball (2007-08 to 2016-17): 3 wins

Skinny: The Tigers haven’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 2013 and haven’t won a game since reaching the Elite 8 in 2009. The most crushing loss was the first-round upset to No. 15 seed Norfolk State in 2012. Those Tigers were 30-5 and seeded No. 2.

Ole Miss

Football (2008-2017): 5 wins

Basketball (2007-08 to 2016-17): 2 wins

Skinny: The Rebels are about to miss out on the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive year and final time under Andy Kennedy. They haven’t made the Sweet 16 since 2001. The dominant January 2016 Sugar Bowl victory over Oklahoma State was a highlight during this stretch.

South Carolina

Football (2008-2017): 5 wins

Basketball (2007-08 to 2016-17): 4 wins

Skinny: All four basketball wins came during last season’s stirring run to the Final Four. That’s the Gamecocks’ only NCAA Tournament appearance since 2004. Steve Spurrier won three New Year’s Day bowl games, but never the big one he was after.

Tennessee

Football (2008-2017): 3 wins

Basketball (2007-08 to 2016-17): 8 wins

Skinny: Likely the most surprising result on this list. The Vols have been to the Sweet 16 three times in this span; they played in a New Year’s Day bowl game just twice (but won both).

Texas A&M

Football (2008-2017): 4 wins

Basketball (2007-08 to 2016-17): 5 wins

Skinny: Another surprising result, the basketball team reached the Sweet 16 in 2016. They’ve won just one bowl game since Johnny Manziel rallied the Aggies to a wild 52-48 victory over Duke in the 2013 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

Vanderbilt

Football (2008-2017): 3 wins

Basketball (2007-08 to 2016-17): 1 win

Skinny: Vandy has posted three of its four bowl wins during this span. The basketball team went to the NCAA Tournament six times in the past 10 years, but only survived the opening game once, in 2012.
