Minkah Fitzpatrick has been Alabama‘s most dominant player on defense this season, and the standout junior was rewarded Thursday by claiming both the Chuck Bednarik and Jim Thorpe Awards at the College Football Awards in Atlanta.
The 6-foot-1, 202-pounder won the prestigious Bednarik Award as the nation’s top defensive player, beating out Roquan Smith of Georgia and Bradley Chubb of NC State. He also took home the Thorpe Award recognizing the best defensive back in the country over Iowa‘s Josh Jackson and Texas standout DeShon Elliott.
Fitzpatrick is the second straight player from Alabama to win the Bednarik Award, following in Jonathan Allen’s footsteps. He becomes the third player ever to win both awards in a single season.
