Yahoo! Sports’ Pat Forde lists Tennessee’s Larry Scott among worst coordinator hires in college football

The promotion of Larry Scott to offensive coordinator at Tennessee was one of the worst hires in college football over the off-season, according to Pat Forde of Yahoo! Sports.

Butch Jones, who was fired as Tennessee’s head coach on Sunday, promoted Scott from tight ends coach to offensive coordinator in January after Mike DeBord left the Volunteers to take over as Indiana’s OC.

Forde included Scott as one of the the five worst coordinator hires in college football in a recent article he wrote for Yahoo! Sports.

Scott’s offense at Tennessee has been abysmal this season. The Vols rank dead last in the SEC in total offense, passing offense and scoring offense. They also managed to go a little over a month without scoring an offensive touchdown during one stretch of the season.

Here’s what Forde had to say about Scott and his offense at UT:

“Promoted from tight ends coach by Butch Jones just in time to pilot the Titanic into an iceberg of inefficiency. Replacing three-year fixture Josh Dobbs at quarterback was going to be a challenge, but nobody knew it would turn out to be impossible. Tennessee actually went more than three full games without an offensive touchdown, hasn’t scored more than 28 in regulation against an FBS opponent and ranks last in the SEC in pass efficiency — and the SEC isn’t a very good passing league.”
