WATCH: Tennessee fan performs Jon Gruden version of hit Charlie Daniels song

There have been plenty of stories tying Jon Gruden to the open job at Tennessee, but this may be the first country song written and performed about the possibility.

Tony Paul performed a Jon Gruden to Tennessee version of Charlie Daniels’ hit song, “Devil Went Down to Georgia,” with a detailed look at how overtures from Athletics Director John Currie to Gruden might unfold.

“Jon Gruden went down to Knoxville, he was looking for a team to steal,” the song begins. “They were in a bind because they were way behind, they knew they made a bad deal.”

“When they came across this young man, he said $10 million then we’ll talk. Then John Currie jumped about 10 feet high and said ‘Boy, let me tell you what. I guess you didn’t know it, but I’m as fired up as you. And if you care to coach this team, I’ll make a bet with you. You coach pretty good football boy and the Vols are way past due, so if you take us to a championship, I’m going to take care of you.’”

Less than 24 hours after a press conference by Currie to explain the latest developments related to the football program, there were reports about Gruden reaching out to former players and coaches about joining his staff.

That would likely be welcome news for Paul, who finished his song with a powerful crescendo.

“Tennessee’s about to get this shiny trophy made of gold. But if you don’t agree, God have mercy on your soul.”
