LISTEN: Greg McElroy, Taylor Zarzour explain how two-loss Auburn could miss Playoff

The college football season is winding down, and it is that time of year when everyone loves to debate potential scenarios for the College Football Playoff.

One team in the midst of most discussions is Auburn. The Tigers are unique in that they are trying to become the first two-loss team to make the Playoff.

Auburn would be in incredible position right now if not for blowing a huge lead to LSU earlier in the season, but the general consensus is that the Tigers still control their own destiny after knocking off No. 1 Georgia 40-17. Auburn will take on Alabama during the final week of the season with another shot to record an upset.

A win over Alabama and beating Georgia again in the SEC Championship Game would seem to vault the Tigers into the Playoff. While that is a possibility, Greg McElroy and Taylor Zarzour provided a scenario that would put a wrench in Auburn’s plans.

Both analysts pointed to Clemson as a team that could decide Auburn’s fate if Clemson drops the ball and is upset by South Carolina. Clemson, if they then beat Miami in the ACC Championship, would also be a two-loss conference champion with a head-to-head win over Auburn from earlier this year as a potential tie-break in the decision making.

It should be noted that head-to-head did not factor in much with the committee’s decision last year. Penn State beat Ohio State during the regular season and won the Big 10, but the committee still selected OSU over Penn State in the final rankings.
