Though he remains optimistic about the future, Tom Herman acknowledged Monday his first season as head coach at Texas has largely been a disappointment.
“Well, I think where we’re at is not where we had hoped to be,” Herman said of the 5-5 Longhorns at his weekly press conference, according to Chuck Carlton of the Dallas Morning News.
Texas entered the season hoping for an instant turnaround under Herman, who two years ago guided Houston to an undefeated campaign as a first-year coach.
A stunning home loss to Maryland in the season opener spoiled those plans, and while the Longhorns have hung tough with strong competition all year, they’ve still failed to win any of the four ranked games they’ve played in 2017.
“We’ve got to win one that we’re not supposed to,” Herman said. “I think right now, save for the very first game, we’ve won the ones that we’re supposed to, and we haven’t (won) the ones that people said we weren’t supposed to. So I think that’s got to be the next step.”
