Herman: When healthy, Buechele will 'probably' get 1st-team reps

Despite a gutsy effort from freshman quarterback Sam Ehlinger, Texas came up short against USC in overtime on Saturday night.

The highly touted pivot flashed moments of brilliance, including the go-ahead touchdown with less than a minute to play, in his second start for the injured Shane Buechele.

While Ehlinger demonstrated he has a bright future, head coach Tom Herman hinted afterward that Buechele will probably be the starter when he’s healthy again.

“Moving forward, I don’t know. You know, Monday, we’ll see how Shane feels. If he feels great, if he’s 100 percent, he’ll probably get the bulk of the first-team reps,” Herman told Max Olson of The Athletic. “Just off the top of my head. He hasn’t done much, if anything, to merit a change. I think we know there’s a guy that had some freshman issues tonight but is a guy that was a warrior down the stretch on the road against a top-five team.”

Buechele threw for 375 yards and two scores in the Longhorns’ opening-week loss to Maryland but suffered a shoulder injury that kept him out of the Week 2 win over San Jose State.

The offense looked strong against the Spartans, but sputtered for the majority of the game against the Trojans, though Ehlinger was able to rally that unit in the fourth quarter.
