Gus Malzahn talks Auburn’s QBs following second scrimmage

While it may seem like just a matter of time until Auburn names Jarrett Stidham its starting quarter, coach Gus Malzahn wasn’t ready to do that on Saturday.

The Tigers held their second scrimmage of preseason camp, and the workout featured touchdown passes from all three quarterbacks. It appears the coaching staff may be trying to give Sean White as much of a chance to compete for the job given that he missed spring practice and there’s a new offensive coordinator.

“He [Jarrett Stidham] has done a lot of good things. He’s a talented young man,” Malzahn said according to Auburn’s official website. “I’ve been very impressed with Sean White. If you ask Chip [Lindsey, offensive coordinator], Sean’s like a coach on the field. He knows the offense inside and out.”

Stidham and White split time with the first- and second-team offenses, while freshman Malik Willis spent time with second- and third-team players. At the minimum, Willis offers depth at the position.

“He’s a guy I’m really happy with,” Malzahn said. “He’s been throwing the ball very well. He can extend plays. He can really run. He’s one of our best athletes on our team. The depth at our quarterback position has really been confirmed, and I know Chip would say the same thing.”

Decision time is drawing closer, though, for Malzahn. Auburn is two weeks into camp, and has three weeks left before the Sept. 2 season opener against Georgia Southern. There’s also only one week remaining until classes begin on Aug. 21.
