Auburn has managed to avoid any major injuries so far in preseason camp, but coach Gus Malzahn did identify one player potentially out on Sept. 2 against Georgia Southern, RB JaTravious Whitlow.
“Whitlow is the only one. He had an ankle issue this week,” Malzahn told reporters after the team’s Saturday scrimmage. “He’s the only guy that will have a chance at not being ready for the first game. Everybody else will be ready for the first game.”
A former quarterback and wide receiver, Whitlow is in competition to be Auburn’s No. 3 running back behind Kamryn Pettway and Kerryon Johnson. Luckily for Auburn, depth at running back is not a major concern with Malik Miller, Kam Martin and Devan Barrett still available to get in carries behind Pettway and Johnson.
Whitlow, from Lafayette, Alabama, was rated as a 3-star prospect and ranked as the nation’s No. 36 overall athlete and the state’s No. 26 overall player regardless of position. He was moved to RB this summer to help with depth issues.
He was a three-time All-State player in 2A.
