Former Alabama QB AJ McCarron excited to prove his worth this season

All offseason, rumors were swirling around Cincinnati Bengals backup QB AJ McCarron and whether the Bengals would trade the former Alabama star to a team that needed a starter.

However, nothing materialized, so McCarron will enter training camp as Andy Dalton’s backup once again.

Though he may not be in line to receive the playing time he would like, he is nonetheless excited to get back with his teammates and help the Bengals compete for a playoff spot, according to AL.com:

“Any time you get out and perform, it’s exciting,” McCarron said. “You always, as a competitor, want your own team and everything. This is the deck of cards that I’ve been dealt, and it’s just the way it is. But anytime you get a chance to play, you go out there and try to perform to the best of your ability.”

McCarron didn’t attempt a pass during the 2016 regular season, but he started three games in 2015, throwing for 854 yards and six touchdowns.

The Bengals start their four-game preseason schedule against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Aug. 11. McCarron is sure to receive plenty of playing time in those four games, but how much backup Dalton needs this year remains to be seen.
