During SEC Media Days last week, SEC analyst Paul Finebaum sat down with Saturday Down South to discuss a number of topics.
Some of his strongest opinions came on the subject of Tennessee coach Butch Jones, who Finebaum said has “lowered expectations” for himself in Knoxville.
Finebaum’s full quotes on the embattled Volunteers coach can be seen in the video below:

On Monday, Jones had a chance to respond to Finebaum’s criticism and had some harsh words for him during his ESPN car wash, saying he understands where the popular host is coming from, but doesn’t value his opinion very much (via KnoxNews.com):
“Paul hasn’t played one snap of football for the University of Tennessee,” he said. “Our expectations are to win championships. That’s the next evolution of our football program. … He gets paid to make those comments and I respect that.”
Though Jones obviously knows more about coaching than the SEC Network host, his phrasing was unusual, because Finebaum isn’t the only one who hasn’t played “one snap of football for the University of Tennessee.”
Jones also has never played a single down for the Volunteers, as his college career was at Ferris State from 1987 to 1989.
Of course, this back-and-forth between Jones and Finebaum is just preseason noise. Jones will have a chance to prove himself again this fall, and Tennessee fans will be waiting eagerly to see if their coach can prove Finebaum wrong.
