Watch: Tony Pollard registers 1st Memphis kickoff return TD in 20 years

Thursday’s game between Memphis and Temple was nearly 20 years in the making.

With just under seven minutes to go the fourth quarter, wide receiver Tony Pollard received a kickoff at the Tigers’ six-yard line and proceeded to return the first kickoff for a touchdown by a Memphis player since 1996.

In an almost ridiculous time span, Kevin Cobb was the last Memphis player to return a kickoff for a touchdown prior to Pollard, and he did so against a familiar Tennessee quarterback in the Liberty Bowl.

Among the great moments in the Tigers’ upset of the Volunteers, the kick return is at the 1:25 mark:

In the days of instant replay, it’s interesting to think if Cobb had been ruled down after being hit, the Tigers may have had even more time tacked onto their streak.
