Report: USC's Steven Mitchell out for season with torn ACL

USC receiver Steven Mitchell‘s season is over, after suffering a torn ACL against Arizona on Saturday, according to Scott Wolf of InsideUSC.

The injury occurred in the second quarter, while Mitchell was in the game for a punt return and pulled up on the sidelines after fielding the kick. The junior wideout also tore his ACL in his right knee as a true freshman back in 2013 during summer training.

Mitchell was one of the top targets for quarterback Sam Darnold, making 24 catches for 226 yards and one touchdown this season.

“You can tell how it affected everybody when he went down. Steven is loved by this team. It’s just sad for him,” coach Clay Helton told WeAreSC.com in a media call Sunday.

With Mitchell out, the Trojans are likely to start Deontay Burnett and Jalen Greene at slot receiver. Burnett has recorded 23 catches for 229 yards and two touchdowns through seven games, while Greene has caught three balls for 41 yards.
