ATHENS — The always-serious Kirby Smart brought a little more levity than usual to his post-practice briefing Tuesday at the Butts-Mehre football complex. And some of his comments may require a bleep.
Smart was asked again Tuesday about his relationship with South Carolina coach Will Muschamp when the two of them were playing football at Georgia. Smart intimated that there really wasn’t one.
“I didn’t really know Will, because Will was a fifth-year senior and I was a first-year freshman,” Smart said Tuesday evening. “So I was the little prick on the scout team that’s running around. He was big man on campus. I was shaved-head freshman, so we didn’t hang out.”
Earlier in his news conference, Smart was asked how long he had known the fiery side of Muschamp that has come to be known as “Coach Boom.”
“I don’t know if I know Coach Boom,” Smart said, laughing. “I have not been on staff with Will since Coach Boom was invented. I think he went to Coach Boom at Auburn and I was at the (Miami) Dolphins at the time. So I didn’t see that side of him much.”
That said, Smart said Muschamp has always been fiery. It just hadn’t become a trademark of his coaching personality when they coached together at Valdosta State and LSU earlier in their careers.
“He was fiery the whole time,” Smart said. “I guess whatever happened, wherever the quote came from, wherever the sound byte came from, happened after I coached with him. But he’s always been fiery. There’s some folks at Valdosta State that can tell you about him being fiery.”
