Welcome to the Amway Coach of the Week Fan Poll spotlight. Every week, For the Win will recognize three coaches of teams in the latest Top 25 for their performance over the weekend. We’ll shout out the coaches who deserve praise and point out those who do not. We start this week in Nebraska…
Mike Riley and Nebraska are surging
Nebraska’s real test — a two-week stretch with trips to Madison and Columbus on the schedule — is coming at the end of October, but, for now, the Huskers can celebrate their 5-0 start. It sure beats the 2-4 start the team got off to in Mike Riley’s first season in Lincoln. The schedule has been favorable thus far, with only one game against a Top-25 opponent, and that will continue over the next two weeks. Nebraska should be 7-0 and somewhere in the Top-10 by the time it faces its next ranked opponent.
Western Michigan’s P.J. Fleck is a coaching star
The coaches finally gave Western Michigan some love this week. The 5-0 Broncos cracked the Top 25 for the first time this season after a 49-10 win over Central Michigan. Don’t expect them to drop out anytime soon.
Fleck’s team will be favored in the rest of its game and could be in the middle of a special season. But Western Michigan better enjoy it while it lasts, because Fleck will not be in Kalamazoo for much longer. Along with Houston’s Tom Herman, Fleck will be one of the hottest coaching commodities at season’s end.
Jimbo Fisher and Florida State have a problem
It happened again. Florida State got off to another slow start against North Carolina in a 37-35 loss, and at some point we have to start looking at the coaches. Fisher has to a better job of getting his team ready to play or these losses will keep piling up.
The Seminoles have been outscored by 54 points in the first half against Power 5 competition. They managed to rally against Ole Miss but weren’t able to do so against Louisville and North Carolina. Those losses have Florida State in danger of dropping out of the polls. The ‘Noles fell to No. 21 in the latest Amway Coaches Poll and are facing a tough trip down to Miami this weekend.
