Every once in a while, you just need to survive. Don’t ask how, don’t make excuses, don’t apologize. When a team gives you a break, just take it, adjust, and prepare for the next week.

NC State had Clemson beaten, but the kicking game matters, too.

Kyle Bambard will take the blame after missing the game-winning kick attempt, and the special teams were a disaster all game with three failed field goal tries that kept the Tigers alive.

But they got their new life, and Deshaun Watson came through with the clutch overtime pass to complete a 378-yard, two touchdown, one score day to overcome a four turnover day from the offense.

So does this mean Clemson is really that beatable? Does this prove that the Tigers aren’t really the No. 3 team in the country? Not really.

NC State is really that good.

Matthew Dayes and the ground game were able to get physical, the defense forced the Clemson mistakes with a brilliant day from the outstanding line that stuffed the Tiger running attack, and there but for the grace of one kick, the Wolfpack would’ve been the big story everyone would’ve been talking about this week.

And now Clemson gets to relax a bit. It’s the middle of the season, and now the week off comes at just the right time before preparing for Florida State. It’ll be a much, much easier two weeks now that the battle with the Seminoles isn’t a must win to keep playoff hopes alive.

But the pressure is on now for Clemson to use this time off to figure out how to get sharper – it can’t play like this again and get through the ACC season unbeaten, much less win the national title.

It’ll be a lot more fun to do that at 7-0.
