LEXINGTON, Ky. — It happened again on Mark Stoops’ call-in show.
For the second time this season, Stoops had to listen to a caller suggest his possible replacement as Kentucky’s football coach. Three weeks ago it was Benny from Carrolton, Ky., saying he would love to see Tommy Tuberville coach the Wildcats and Monday it was Bill from Paducah, Ky., who spouted a head scratcher.
First, Bill got former Kentucky QB Patrick Towles’ name wrong before asking, “Is he still on the team or is he transferring.” Stoops politely answered and explained to Bill that Towles was now playing at Boston College. It was downhill from there.
“I’m wondering, coach,” Bill started. “Do you remember the old saying that Don Shula had where you “could take his’n and beat your’n.”
“Yup, we’ve heard that one,” Tom Leach, the host of the call-in show said.
“What I’m wondering is if Coach Mullen at Mississippi State gets fired, do you think he could come to Kentucky maybe?”
The show quickly went to a break before Stoops could say anything.
Kentucky sits at second place in the SEC East and has won three of its last four games but Stoops has faced a steady stream of fan disproval — particularly on the call-in show.
In the segment following Bill’s call, Stoops made a glancing reference to the Mullen question when talking about his defense watching film and learning from mistakes.
“You’ve got to have thick skin,” Stoops said. “Much like this radio show.”
