Why Mississippi State Will Win
So what’s going right for the Bulldogs?
Last week against Auburn was the first blowout loss of the year, but the team struggled in the close loss to South Alabama and the win over UMass. Can the change of scenery be the difference?
The D had a hard time against the Tigers, but for the most part, the run defense has been okay and hasn’t been gouged too often. BYU might be red hot right now running the ball, but the Bulldogs should be able to get behind the line just enough to win their share of battles.
Offensively, if MSU is going to pull this off, it needs a big passing game from Nick Fitzgerald, and not just rely on his legs.
He’s been able to crank it up a bit over the last few weeks – hitting UMass for 305 yards and three scores and coming up with a few nice moments against Auburn, even if it was too late. The BYU secondary isn’t going to make a whole lot of big plays – Fitzgerald and the O have to keep the pressure on.
Why BYU Will Win
There’s no hotter player in college football than Jamaal Williams. The veteran Cougar running back started out well with 166 yards against Arizona, was held in check by Utah and UCLA, and then he went on a tear, highlighted by a 286-yard, five score day against Toledo, and ripping up Michigan State for 163 yards and two touchdowns.
Yeah, the Mississippi State run defense hasn’t been bad, but it also had problems last week against everything Auburn tried to do early on. The Tiger offensive line did a nearly perfect job, and lately, the Cougar front five has been brilliant.
QB Taysom Hill ran for 101 yards against West Virginia, but he hasn’t been needed to do what he normally does on the ground thanks to Williams. He hasn’t been consistent with the passing game, but he’s been good enough at times to provide the needed balance.
This is an adaptable offense depending on the situation, and against the Bulldogs, that might mean grinding out the clock a bit and going on a few long drives.
What’s Going To Happen?
Mississippi State isn’t playing well, but it’s still an SEC team with SEC talent. BYU is playing too well right now – Michigan State is still a Big Ten team with Big Ten talent. Watch out for the Bulldogs to fight a bit and keep this closer than some Cougar fans might like, but the Hill-Williams combination will be too good at home.
