Why Auburn Will Win
Is the offense realy working now?
For as much static as Gus Malzahn has been receiving, he’s been doing what he can each week, adapting the offense and attack for what the team needs. At the end of the day, the two losses came to currently unbeaten Clemson and Texas A&M teams, and the Tigers were in the game against both.
The ground game might be inconsistent, and there’s no reason to take anything from cranking out 410 yards against ULM, but Kerryon Johnson is rolling now coming off a 146-yard, two-score day, while Sean White has been terrific.
No, White isn’t going to bomb away, but he’s not turning the ball over – he hasn’t thrown a pick since the Clemson loss – and he’s been deadly accurate on the midrange plays over the last four weeks.
The ultimate game manager, he’s been great, and now he’s going against a Mississippi State defense that’s having a hard time coming up with enough decent stops, especially on third downs. However …
Why Mississippi State Will Win
The Bulldog defense has been the real deal so far, to a point.
The attacking defensive front should be able to get to Johnson and the Auburn backfield before it can get started, and once again in SEC play, the Tigers should go ultra-conservative at times and rely on its defense and kicking game to get the job done.
The Mississippi State run defense has been fantastic so far, while it’s been the secondary that’s had issues – Auburn isn’t going to be able to attack the weakness.
This should be a slugfest of a game, and the Bulldogs are equipped to pound away with 200 yards or more on the ground in three of the four games with QB Nick Fitzgerald taking off and doing many of the things Auburn quarterbacks are supposed to do.
Mississippi State has to take advantage of its chances. This won’t be a shootout, so if it can get a few touchdowns while Auburn is settling for field goals, it’s got a shot.
What’s Going To Happen?
Auburn is probably a whole lot better than you think.
It’s been sort of blown off, but the Tigers have faced three terrific teams – yeah, LSU is terrific now – and they keep on surviving. They’ll win on special teams, field position, and by running the ball a wee bit better than Mississippi State will.
