Why Alabama Will Win

Does Tennessee have any live bodies left?

Even at full strength it would be tough for the Vols to hang around and beat the Crimson Tide, but RB Jalen Hurd is still trying to get back from a concussion problem, the linebacking corps is blasted with injuries, and the offensive front took a major hit in the loss to Texas A&M.

If Tennessee follows form and gets out to a slow start, forget about it. It’s one thing to come up with massive comebacks against Florida and Texas A&M, but the Alabama defense – even though it’s giving up yards and points – has a way of rising up when it absolutely has to. Yeah, Arkansas put up 30 points on the board, but the Crimson Tide were always in control.

Despite facing USC, Ole Miss and Arkansas, Bama still has the nation’s No. 1 D, giving up a mere 415 yards so far this year and two scores. It’s partly due to the greatness of the defensive front, but it’s also thanks to the constant barrage in the backfield from all sides.

From Ryan Anderson and Tim Williams, to Jonathan Allen up front, to playmaking pickoff artist – at least against Arkansas – Minkah Fitzpatrick, this D is crashing behind the line as well as anyone in the country. There won’t be any second half comebacks on this group.

Why Tennessee Will Win

If it’s possible to be playing Alabama at home with the pressure off, this is the game for Tennessee to come in with a different attitude.

Yeah, it finally lost, and yeah, the lucky bounces finally stopped, but the Vols still almost pulled out the A&M game even though everything went the wrong way.

And now it’s up to Joshua Dobbs to have the game of his life as more than just the guy who can lead comebacks. This has to be his day from start to finish.

As good as the Alabama defense might be, it gave up 421 passing yards to Chad Kelly in the win over Ole Miss, and it got hit with 400 yards by Arkansas’ Austin Allen last week.

Dobbs has been okay, but he’s thrown at least one pick in every game and he’s been way, way, way too inconsistent. Even so, he bombed Texas A&M for 398 yards last week and threw for 319 against Florida.

He can put up the yards, and he can make things happen to move the chains with his smarts, his legs, and now we know, his playmaking ability in the second half. He’s been okay over the last two years against the pressure of the Alabama D, but in his fourth go against it, if he’s not the best player on the field, Tennessee loses.

What’s Going To Happen?

Alabama will do what it’s done in the last two big games on the road – the offense will crank it up.

With a terrific balance, the Crimson Tide have been able to overcome the issues in the secondary by methodically taking care of business. It’s an explosive attack, but more than that, it just doesn’t screw up. Expect more of the same on a beaten up Tennessee that’ll put up a great fight, but just won’t have the personnel to hold up for a full 60 minutes.
