COLUMBIA, S.C. – Will Muschamp got a good first taste of the South Carolina tradition of opening its season on Thursday night. With a win in his pocket, Muschamp and the Gamecocks coaches hit the recruiting trail and got to game preparation before soaking in an impressive first weekend of college football.

“I was able to watch some games,” Muschamp said on a Sunday teleconference. “I always enjoy being able to flip through and watch different teams.”

While South Carolina got its season off to a winning start at Vanderbilt, what took place through the rest of the weekend for the SEC was less than stellar. LSU was upset by Wisconsin, Auburn fell to Clemson and three more conference teams dropped to 0-1 on Saturday.

Among those losses was Mississippi State, the Gamecocks’ next opponent as they travel to Starkville on Saturday night for another conference clash. The Bulldogs fell 21-20 to South Alabama in their first game after kicker Westin Graves’ potential game-winning field goal struck the left upright as time expired.

“We will face a different football team on Saturday night in Starkville,” he said. “We know that. We just need to worry about South Carolina and take care of our preparation. That’s all I’m worried about.”

Muschamp said Sunday that he cautioned someone who dismissed South Alabama and pointed to overall parity in college football. But with both the season-opening win for the Gamecocks in the past and the Bulldogs’ loss in the rearview mirror, Muschamp was focused on what comes next.

And that is a schedule with more conference tests, which Muschamp still sees despite the lackluster opening weekend for the SEC.

“Our league is strong, regardless of what happened in the first weekend,” Muschamp said. “We still have a bunch of good players and a bunch of good coaches. We’ve got our work cut out for us.”
