It’s a new era for South Carolina football, and it has to start out with a bang on a Thursday night. Vanderbilt is thinking bowl game this year, but that probably can’t happen without a win over the Gamecocks. Check out the South Carolina vs. Vanderbilt fearless prediction and preview.
South Carolina vs. Vanderbilt Game Preview
Date: Thursday, September 1st
Game Time: 8:00 pm ET
Venue: Vanderbilt Stadium, Nashville, TN
Why South Carolina Will Win
The defensive front seven should be terrific – at least it’s going to be a whole lot better under the new coaching staff.
The Vanderbilt offense will be better – or at least more experienced – but it’s not going to put 40 points up on the board. As long as the USC offense can come up with a few early scores and make the Commodores work a bit, the defense should take over with more pressure into the backfield and good toughness against the mediocre Vandy O line.
South Carolina’s big problem early on should be the secondary, and the Commodores aren’t going to do much to take advantage of that. The Vandy receivers are fine, but they’re not going to be gamebreakers.
Why Vanderbilt Will Win
Is the South Carolina offense going to do much of anything right away? The defense should be ahead of the offense that doesn’t have a loaded line to do much to push against the terrific Vandy defensive front.
The Gamecocks have to run well to win, and they’re not going to do much of that unless true freshman quarterback Brandon McIlwain – assuming he plays a big role in the fun – does something interesting. Finding yards on the ground will be like pulling teeth.
No, Vanderbilt won’t light up the scoreboard, and South Carolina won’t, either. This will be an ugly defensive slugfest that should come down to a few clutch plays in the second half. Those usually go to the more experienced team at home.
What’s Going To Happen?
Both teams are pretty much alike in terms of style and substance. Vanderbilt has the more experienced and stronger D, while South Carolina has more upside on offense. There won’t be anything pretty about this other than it’s an SEC game that matters on a Thursday night to start the season, and it’s going to be intense.
The team that makes the fewer mistakes wins, and stunningly, considering the youth across the board, that’ll be the Gamecocks.
