Mountain West Week 1 Rankings, Predictions & Quick Takes
How are the Mountain West picks so far? SU: 11-1, ATS: 2-4
1. Boise State (1-0)
Final Score: Boise State 45, Louisiana-Lafayette 10
Prediction: Boise State 45, ULL 27, Boise State -20, o/u: 64
Up Next: Washington State
Quick Take: It’s always dangerous to go on a long road trip against a team with something to prove, but Boise State ended the fun before it could get started. Brett Rypien was terrific, throwing for 347 yards and two scores, and the running game was just fine to settle things down after a 35-3 first half. There weren’t any turnovers, the penalties weren’t any big deal, and the defense crushed the ULL ground game. The team looked the part.
2. San Diego State (1-0)
Final Score: San Diego State 31, New Hampshire 0
Prediction: San Diego State 38, New Hampshire 13
Up Next: California
Quick Take: Whoa … that’s what the San Diego State defense is supposed to do. Christian Chapman took care of the offense with 283 yards and two scores, both to Mikah Holder. While the running game was disturbingly mediocre, there wasn’t any threat. Why? The defense allowed 141 yards of UNH offense and didn’t allow a third down conversion. But now the ground game has to be better to handle a rested Cal.
3. Air Force (1-0)
Final Score: Air Force 37, Abilene Christian 21
Prediction: Air Force 55, Abilene Christian 13
Up Next: Georgia State
Quick Take: The offense was just fine and the defense did what it needed to do, but it wasn’t a dominant performance on either side of the ball outside of a good second quarter. The running game was okay with Jacobi Owens leading the way with 119 yards averaging ten yards per carry, and Nate Romine was fine throwing the ball going deep for 184 yards and two scores on just five completions.
4. Utah State (1-0)
Final Score: Utah State 45, Weber State 6
Prediction: Utah State 31, Weber State 14
Up Next: at USC
Quick Take: That’s how Utah State is supposed to play. Devante Mayes was outstanding running for 208 yards and three scores, while the defense allowed just 245 Weber State yards. Kent Myers was effective, completing 11-of-17 passes for 100 yards, mainly because the ground attack took over with 428 yards and six scores. USC will pose a little bit more of a challenge next week, but the Aggie O was sensational – there was plenty of room to move.
5. Nevada (1-0)
Final Score: Nevada 30, Cal Poly 27 OT
Prediction: Nevada 38, Cal Poly 20
Up Next: Notre Dame
Quick Take: Apparently, the Wolf Pack have to learn how to close. The had the game in hand, but they couldn’t stop the Cal Poly ground game in the fourth quarter and the offense sputtered after the first quarter. They survived the disaster with a James Butler touchdown run to win in overtime, but after a brilliant start, the O didn’t have the ball. Cal Poly had the ball for over 36 minutes – that’s what Nevada is supposed to do. If Tyler Stewart can keep completing 17-of-23 passes, and if Butler can keep running for 123 yards and two scores, everything will be fine.
6. New Mexico (1-0)
Final Score: New Mexico 48, South Dakota 21
Prediction: New Mexico 34, South Dakota 23
Up Next: at New Mexico State
Quick Take: That’s how you open up a season, Teryion Gipson took the first handoff 75 yards for a score, and the ground game kept on rolling. It was a rocky first quarter giving up two long scoring dashes, but the defense clamped down just as the offense stepped it up with 428 yards on the ground while keeping the ball for almost 35 minutes. Austin Apodaca was ultra-efficient, completing 12-of-16 passes for 172 yards and two scores. Throw out the defensive struggles in the first quarter, and the Lobos looked great.
7. Colorado State (0-1)
Final Score: Colorado 44, Colorado State 7
Prediction: Colorado 27, Colorado State 23, Colorado -8, o/u: 54.5
Up Next: UTSA
Quick Take: The Rams ran into a buzzsaw. The defense didn’t show up, and the passing game that was supposed to improve no matter who the quarterback was turned into a disaster. Nick Stevens was awful completing 6-of-20 passes with two picks, and Faton Bauta’s scoring play and nice drive came too late. It’s one bad, ugly, horrible-looking loss – the Rams have to blow this off. They’re better than this. They’d better be.
8. UNLV (1-0)
Final Score: UNLV 63-13
Prediction: UNLV 52, Jackson State 17
Up Next: at UCLA
Quick Take: It was a great first day for new QB Johnny Stanton, completing 10-of-12 passes for 217 yards and three touchdowns, and he figured it out in a hurry – throw it to Devonte Boyd. The star receiver caught four passes with three going for scores as the offense rolled at will against the Jackson State D. Everything clicked right out of the gate on offense, but now comes the test against UCLA to see just how good the attack can really be.
9. Wyoming (1-0)
Final Score: Wyoming 40, NIU 34 2OT
Prediction: NIU 40, Wyoming 23, NIU -10, o/u: 55.5
Up Next: at Nebraska
Quick Take: The Cowboys almost gagged away a big lead after the offense rolled early on, and it couldn’t seem to close after having problems with missed kicks, but even with ten penalties, and even after a meltdown in the crazy late night game, they just beat one of the best teams in the MAC. After last year’s disaster against Eastern Michigan, they’ll take it. Welcome to Josh Allen – UW might have its quarterback now after he threw for 254 yards and two scores to go along with the game-winning run.
10. Fresno State (0-1)
Final Score: Nebraska 43, Fresno State 10
Prediction: Nebraska 40, Fresno St 23, Nebraska -28
Up Next: Sacramento State
Quick Take: Fresno State had its chances to get make this better than the final score appears. The defense couldn’t handle the Nebraska ground game getting pushed around way too much, but it was still a battle going into the fourth quarter. Chason Virgil looked good early on making the passing game work before getting banged up, and the running game didn’t pick up the slack.
Final Score: Michigan 63, Hawaii 3
Prediction: Michigan 48, Hawaii 6, Michigan -40.5, o/u: 54.5
Up Next: UT Martin
Quick Take: Michigan was going to come out roaring no matter what, and the same things that Cal weren’t going to work in Ann Arbor. Michigan wasn’t going to miss big open field tackles, and the passing game wasn’t going to find anything that worked down the field. The Rainbow Warriors might be 0-2, but they’re still better than last year. Beat UT Martin, press the reset button, and keep on improving. This was simply a bad day against a tremendous team.
12. San Jose State (0-1)
Final Score: Tulsa 45, San Jose State 10
Prediction: Tulsa 47, San Jose State 37, Tulsa -4
Up Next: Portland State
Quick Take: The offense turned it over three times, the defense got destroyed by the Tulsa running game, and it was ugly early and it didn’t get much better. There wasn’t any running game – the Spartans had to start firing away after a horrible first quarter – and Kenny Potter couldn’t get the O back into the game. It was a disaster, and it could only get worse – Portland State isn’t a gimme.
