Mike Leach after 0-2 start: 'We have the atmosphere of a JC softball game'

After a 9-4 season that ended with a Sun Bowl win over Miami, Washington State is off to a disappointing start. The Cougars are 0-2 after losses to Eastern Washington and Boise State.

Mike Leach is not happy.

And when Mike Leach isn’t happy, that typically leads to Mike Leach saying incredible things. And Monday was no exception. He tore into his team’s mentality during a press conference in what should ultimately go down as one of Leach’s better rants.

He said:

“We have the atmosphere of a JC softball game. I mean, that’s what we are — a JC softball team. As long — it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s like the team that wins is the one that has the most fun. Crap like that. All that stuff that’s contaminated America where they give every kid a trophy, and they don’t keep score in little league anymore. I think that entire thing is retarding the competitive spirit of America. And I think we need to keep that in mind. And as coaches, you know, we need to aggressively reinforce our points.”

I don’t know why Leach was so upset about little league teams not keeping score, but I’m glad he brought it up out of nowhere. Mike Leach wants to win to save America’s youth.

But really, they just need to find their inner pirate.
