Michigan vs. UCF Game Preview

Date: Saturday, September 10th
Game Time: 12:00 om
Venue: Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, MI
Network: ABC

Why UCF Will Win

Can the defense possibly hold up against the Michigan balance and power? The defensive talent isn’t there to stand firm if the Wolverines get into a groove pounding the ball, but this is a fast, athletic group of Knights that swarmed around everything South Carolina State wanted to do last week – allowing 223 yards of total offense – and provided a pop, coming up with three takeaways. Michigan had few problems overcoming mistakes against Hawaii, but it gave up a big pick early – UCF will need several of those.

The Knight offense, mostly, has to figure out how to slow the game down. That might not be in the team’s nature under new head coach Scott Frost – it goes against everything the attack is supposed to be about – but it’s going to have to control the clock. UCF held on to the ball for over 32 minutes last week, but it’ll have to keep it longer in Ann Arbor.

Why Michigan Will Win

Wilton Speight and the Michigan offense should get all the time it needs to work. UCF didn’t have to turn the dogs loose to get by South Carolina State, but it didn’t generate a sack and rarely got behind the line. Speight threw a bad pass early against Hawaii, and then it was target practice time having no problems waiting for his targets to get open deep. He’ll do that again behind a line that should dominate from the start.

The UCF running game isn’t going anywhere. It wasn’t able to generate too much of a push in the opener, and it’s not going to find a whole slew of holes against a Wolverine defense that never let the Rainbow Warriors get free. Cal missed a slew of tackles in the season opener, but the Wolverines didn’t whiff often last week in a fantastic performance. The pedestrian UCF attack won’t get wide often enough break off anything big.

What’s Going To Happen?

Hawaii game, part 2. UCF is far better than it was last season, and it’ll improve as the season goes on once it becomes more comfortable with the scheme – but it’s not happening this week.

The terrific Michigan running game barreled for over 300 yards against Hawaii averaging almost eight yards per carry, and it’ll do more of the same. The Knights will be solid for about a quarter, and then the floodgates will open while the Wolverine D will go a second straight week without allowing a touchdown.
