Houston vs. Cincinnati Game Preview
Date: Thursday, September 15th
Game Time: 7:30 pm
Venue: Nippert Stadium, Cincinnati, OH
Why Houston Will Win
Everyone’s fine. That’s why you play Lamar in between Oklahoma and Cincinnati – it’s a week off.
Star QB Greg Ward was able to chill out and rest up his aching shoulder, while RB Duke Catalon got to give his sprained ankle a break. The two offensive stars of the Oklahoma win will be back, and now they’re rested and ready to roll against a mediocre Cincinnati defense that got picked apart by the Purdue passing attack last week and has been a nightmare on third downs.
How can Houston take all the momentum out of the game? Keep the chains moving and keep holding the ball for over 37 minutes a game. Almost no one does that better than Ward and the Cougar O.
How bad have the Bearcats been at getting off the field? In the first two games they allowed UT Martin and Purdue to combine to convert 19-of-33 chances.
The Bearcat defensive front was expected to be the weak link going into the season, and while it hasn’t been awful, it hasn’t been much so far when it comes to getting to the quarterback. Don’t get to Ward, and it’s going to be a long, long night.
Why Cincinnati Will Win
Watch out. Everyone’s going to tune in to see one quarterback, and they might come away talking about the other guy.
In one of the big offseason shockers, Cincinnati picked sophomore Hayden Moore over Gunner Kiel as the starting quarterback, and it’s looking like the brilliant call so far.
Adding some mobility to the mix, Moore has rushed for 71 yards and two scores while throwing for 510 yards and five scores with a pick, doing a strong job against Purdue on the road, and while he’s not Ward, he should be just good enough to hold his own.
How did the Bearcats beat Purdue so easily? Five takeaways and no turnovers with seven interceptions and eight forced turnovers on the year. LB Mike Tyson has three picks and safety Tyrell Gilbert two – they’ll take away the midrange, on the move throws that make Ward so dangerous.
What’s Going To Happen?
Last year Cincinnati rolled up 589 yards against Houston and held the high-powered Cougars to 427 – and lost. How? Ward didn’t throw well, giving up two picks along the way, but he ran for over 100 yards with the ground game carrying the day.
It’ll be Cincinnati’s turn this time around.
To kick off what’ll be a wild weekend of shockers, Moore will be flawless, the Bearcat linebackers will keep Ward from taking off, and while there will be a whole lot of bending from the UC D, it’s not going to break late.
It’ll be a wild and crazy shootout worthy of the national audience. It’ll also provide a glimpse into a possible future showdown of Big 12 expansion buddies.
