Houston benched Matthew Adams after injuring Tyus Bowser in fight

Houston benched starting middle linebacker Matthew Adams for Thursday’s game against UConn after he fought and injured starting outside linebacker Tyus Bowser a day earlier.

“Yesterday, during our weekly tradition of family Fridays, where we go out on the field and play some silly games just to loosen the thing up, dodge ball, whiffle ball, two-hand touch football, the two got over competitive and things briefly got out of hand during one of the games and resulted in a scuffle between Tyus and Matt, two brothers,” Cougars coach Tom Herman told reporters after the game, according to Sam Khan Jr. of ESPN.

“It was a freak accident and the result of the scuffle was a broken bone for Tyus. It will keep him out of the lineup for a few weeks. Our culture is one of love and the two are very close, remain very close, and definitely consider (each other) brothers.”

Herman added he expects to learn more about Bowser’s injury in the coming days, while Adams will be welcomed back into the lineup next week.

Adams, a junior and a first-year starter, has 24 tackles and a sack on the season. Bowser, a senior, has 18 tackles and 3.5 sacks.

Houston rolled over UConn on Thursday to improve its record to 5-0. The Cougars play at Navy on Oct. 8.
