Why Kansas State Will Win

Last year’s Kansas State team wasn’t the normal Kansas State team. This year, watch out.

These Wildcats are experienced, mature, and built back up into the type of team that’s been able to rise up from time to time under Bill Snyder and shock the world. Stanford, meanwhile, has to replace just about everyone except one superstar running back.

K-State might not be the Big 12’s best defense statistically, but it shouldn’t be all that far off with a special linebacking corps and a terrific front seven with the experience and talent to keep Christian McCaffrey under wraps. They aren’t household names, but linebackers Elijah Lee and Will Davis, along with all-star safety Dante Barnett, lead a D that’s starting ten upperclassmen – there won’t be any fooling this group.

The offense should be far stronger, too, with Jesse Ertz back again at quarterback after getting hurt last year and missing out on all the fun.

The Wildcats will have the ability to grind this game down to a crawl and keep the Stanford offense off the field. Get ready for them to muck it up.

Why Stanford Will Win

Fine, Kansas State. You want to try running the ball? You want to be ultra-efficient? You want to try to win on special teams and play smart, heady football? Welcome to the Stanford program that’s doing just that, only better.

Yeah, the Cardinal have to replace QB Kevin Hogan, almost all the top receiving targets, and three starters on the O line. But at this point, Stanford really does just reload at this point, especially up front. As good as the Kansas State defense is going to be, it might not matter – Iowa’s defensive front last year was outstanding, too.

The X factor for the Wildcats this year is a passing game that rarely showed up, and is hardly a sure-thing to start the season. For all the issues and concerns about experienced starters, Stanford’s secondary is going to be a brick wall this year against mediocre passing attacks. Kansas State is going to have a mediocre passing attack.

What’s Going To Happen?

Kansas State’s going to give Stanford a nightmare of a time.

The Cardinal won’t be sleepy like they were in last year’s opening week clunker against Northwestern, but they’re not going to be all that sharp against a Wildcat team that’s going to be as sound and sure as they come. At some point, though, Kansas State will need to start moving the ball through the air, and it won’t be able to do it.

Many are going to ask what’s wrong with Stanford after this. As the season goes on, and as Kansas State keeps playing well, this win will look better and better.
