One reason why Alabama's championship defense may already be doomed

With 6/1 odds from Bovada, Alabama is the favorite to win the national championship. And the coaches clearly agree with the oddsmakers. They ranked Alabama No. 1 in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll.

Don’t get too excited Tide fans. That title hasn’t always been a good omen for the season — especially over the last decade. Since 2006, no preseason No. 1 has gone on to win the national championship. coaches_poll_No_1Also working against Alabama: Defending champs that have started the season at No. 1 have had a tough time living up to expectations.

From USA TODAY’s Erick Smith:

“There’s one historical obstacle working against the Crimson Tide, however. Since USA TODAY Sports started managing the Amway Coaches Poll in 1991, nine defending national champions have started No. 1 in the following preseason poll. All nine have failed to repeat.”

Since Nick Saban’s arrival in 2007, Alabama has twice been ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll. Both times, the Tide finished outside of the top five.

As if playing in the SEC wasn’t enough, Alabama will also have to overcome recent history to win its 17th national title.
