Defensive end MJ Webb has made South Carolina happy by announcing his commitment to the program on Friday.
Webb took to Twitter to announce his decision to join the Gamecocks:
A Georgia native, Webb is an interesting defensive line prospect in the 2017 class. He’s highly regarded as a 4-star prospect who is ranked as the No. 8 defensive end, No. 26 player in his home state and No. 240 overall, per 247Sports.
Webb currently looks the part of a defensive end at 6’4″ and 258 pounds, but as ESPN’s Recruiting Nation noted, his body type and skill set are such that he could end up playing anywhere on the line:
Very nice combination of height and bulk at this stage with muscular build and very good strength. Extremely stout at the point of attack and fast enough to make plays in pursuit from the backside. Possesses the lateral quickness and explosion to be a disruptive presence against the pass. Versatile enough to play every position along the defensive line. Powerful tackler.
As this video from MaxPreps shows, Webb had no problems dismantling smaller high school competition:
Versatility on the defensive line also gives Webb options as he moves deeper into his college career. His ability to move inside and out allows him to stay on the field for three downs.
Every team in the nation is craving high-ceiling depth on the defensive line. If the player can handle multiple positions, even better.
Webb is a development project, as he’s currently in the dreaded “tweener” territory thanks to his weight. Working with a college training and nutrition staff will help him settle into an area that allows his speed and power to play.
