Michigan vs. Hawaii Game Preview
Date: Saturday, September 3rd
Game Time: 12:00 PM ET
Venue: Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, MI
Why Hawaii Will Win
No, Hawaii doesn’t have the talent to pull this off, but under new head coach Nick Rolovich, this is a different team that should be a whole lot better than it’s been over the last few years.
Will having a game under its belt matter? Hawaii has real, live game action to go off of with the offense getting the ground attack going a bit taking off for 242 yards. Michigan might be able to prepare for it – now it has game film – but the Rainbow Warriors showed against the Bears that they could get their backs in space.
This is a relatively deep Hawaii backfield that should be able to keep the pressure on a bit. There but for a few key mistakes, and the 51-31 loss to the Bears would’ve been a whole lot closer. If the Warriors aren’t -3 in turnover margin like they were in Sydney, they should be able to make it a wee bit of a fight for a while.
Why Michigan Will Win
Michigan won’t whiff on the tackles like Cal did.
Hawaii might have a solid offensive line and a great stable of backs, but it also helped that the Bears put on a clinic at missing open field tackles. There were way too many opportunities to make plays, and Cal didn’t do it. The Wolverine linebackers – even though they’re going to be a bit of a work in progress as a unit – will get the job done.
Michigan won’t throw and throw some more like Cal did with Davis Webb, but Hawaii’s secondary won’t have it any easier against the Wolverine receiving corps that’s better and stronger. It’ll be easy to try blasting away with the running game – Cal came up with 189 yards – but whenever a midrange third down conversion needs to be made, Michigan should be able to get it done.
It might just be the opener against a team with a game of work, but the Wolverine attack should do whatever it wants to.
What’s Going To Happen?
The only suspense will be the Michigan quarterback situation. Will the starter be announced coming out of the tunnel? Probably, and even then John O’Korn and Wilton Speight will each see time.
The defense will put on a show. Jim Harbaugh won’t let this get too embarrassing, but the inspired defense won’t give up a thing after an early Rainbow Warrior scoring drive.
