Georgia Tech vs. Boston College Game Preview
Date: Saturday, September 3rd
Game Time: 7:30 am ET
Venue: Aviva Stadium, Dublin, Ireland
Why Georgia Tech Will Win
The pieces are in place again in the Georgia Tech offensive backfield. QB Justin Thomas has been around long enough to know all the subtle nuances of the Yellow Jacket attack. Experienced enough to be patient against the great Boston College defensive front, he should be able keep peck, peck, pecking until something finally opens up on the outside. This will be a grind, not a shootout – the Yellow Jacket offense should be able to handle it.
On the other side of the ball, Boston College doesn’t have the weapons. The offense should be better – it can’t be any worse – but the retooling Yellow Jacket defense shouldn’t have too many problems shutting down any BC passing game. However …
Why Boston College Will Win
The addition of Patrick Towles should make a huge difference to the BC offense. The team needed a real, live quarterback to try getting past all the inefficiencies, and the Kentucky transfer should be the exact right guy for the gig. The Georgia Tech defense doesn’t have the nastiest of secondaries – Towles will have his moments.
And then there’s the BC D that’s set up perfectly for the Georgia Tech offense. The linebackers are among the best in the ACC – or at least, they’ll be among the most productive – and the line has the veteran talent to keep everything clogged up inside. With a whole offseason to prepare, this is the exact right defensive front to stop the option.
What’s Going To Happen?
The two teams have only played eight times and haven’t met since Georgia Tech won 37-17 back in 2012. The Irish won’t get a barnburner of a shootout, but it’s an important conference game for both teams coming off of disastrous campaigns – this game matters.
The BC offense will be better, but it won’t be strong enough to overcome two good second half drives from the Yellow Jacket attack. Tech will struggle way too much to take control, but Thomas will come up with three good throws to keep scoring drives alive on the way to a tough win. BC will get an ACC win again another day.
