Tim Tebow discusses loyalty to Urban Meyer, Gators

Former Florida quarterback has remained in close contact with his former coach, Urban Meyer. The Ohio State coach has even gone as far as to use Tebow’s quotes and image in Buckeyes recruiting material, which raises some eyebrows considering the results of a past BCS championship game.

But don’t worry, Gators fans, even if Tebow helps Meyer with recruiting, his loyalty to his alma mater exceeds that to his former coach. In a recent interview with the Associated Press to promote his new book, “Shaken,” the 2007 Heisman winner made clear how he would be rooting in a hypothetical Florida-Ohio State game.

“Coach Meyer is like a father figure to me,” Tebow said. “But I’m a Gator. I’ve been a Gator since I was a little boy. My mom and dad were Gators. I had two siblings that were Gators and I’ll always be a Gator. So if (Florida and Ohio State) are playing in the national championship, Coach Meyer might have to be Gator bait.”

In the interview, Tebow also talked about the possibility of getting into coaching one day.

“I love what coaching is,” he said. “I love the fact that coaching is teaching and it’s helping and it’s mentoring and it’s loving and it’s being a father figure. That is something that has always intrigued me.”

But he’s also open to the idea of an eventual career in politics.

“My goal has always been able to make the biggest impact that I possibly could in people’s lives,” Tebow said. “If I thought this is the right avenue, this would work, then I would be totally up for going down that path. Do I feel like that’s right now? No, not necessarily. Could it happen in the future? Yeah, I definitely wouldn’t write that off.”

This fall, Tebow will be back with the SEC Network for another season as a college football analyst.
