Florida Gators linebacker Cristian Garcia stopped an alleged sexual assault behind a bar early Thursday morning, according to Gainesville, Florida, police.
Per First Coast News WTLV, the junior walk-on works security at 101 Cantina, and he rushed to the 19-year-old victim’s defense after witnessing 34-year-old Christopher Shaw allegedly raping her while she was unconscious.
Shaw was arrested and charged with sexual battery.
Garcia is a Miami native who appeared in one game for the Gators last season.
Per First Coast News WTLV, Garcia had the following to say regarding the incident and his decision to stop it: “The girl was basically unconscious, so I knew there was no way she could be giving consent. … I hold strong moral values and I don’t think anyone should be taken advantage of in that kind of way.”
Shaw escaped after a struggle with Garcia and a co-worker, but Gainesville police were able to apprehend him.
