ATHENS – At Georgia’s official groundbreaking for the new $30 million Indoor Athletic Facility this past Tuesday, it was Kirby Smart, two months on the job as the Bulldogs’ football coach, who stood in front of media, donors and fans, ceremonially tossing dirt with a red-and-black shovel.
New Head Football Coach Kirby Smart is reaping the benefits of a new way of thinking in Athens these days. It seems gone are the days of the Georgia athletic department holding onto to millions of dollars in revenue and storing them away for a rainy day. A new, much-needed indoor practice facility is under construction and the budget for recruiting travel exploded by almost 300%. It seems Smart has convinced UGA it needs to spend like a champion if they want to be a champion.
