When Paul “Bear” Bryant took the Alabama head coaching job in 1958 leaving Texas A&M a reporter asked him “why?” He simply replied “Mama called.” That’s what’s happened in Coral Gables, FL & Athens, GA this week. The University of Miami & University of Georgia reached out to their respective football children for help and both got their early Christmas wish. Mark Richt led the Georgia Bulldogs for the past 15 years compiling a record of 145-51. He was a back up quarterback to NFL Hall of Famer Jim Kelly for Miami from 1979-1982. Kirby Smart is currently the defensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide since 2008 calling defenses for 3 National Title (2009, 2011, 2012) and 3 SEC Championship teams (2009, 2011, 2014). He was a defensive back for Georgia Bulldogs from 1995-1998. Both Richt and Smart are reported to be taking the head coaching jobs at the their respected universities in the coming days. The expectations at both schools are already high and they haven’t even signed yet. Time will tell if they’ll be successful. One thing’s for certain, “football family” still has a lot meaning today as it did in 1958.
